The books that influence my thinking.

In May 2018 I attended The Leadership Circle’s Annual Conference in Sydney. Amongst the speakers was the wonderful Michael Bungay Stanier, who presented a keynote based on his work from his best selling book, The Coaching Habit, as well as a workshop on the neuroscience of engagement.

Since then I’ve been a huge fan of his work. His books are brilliant, and he is able to take some of the complexity and mystery surrounding coaching, identify key principles and distill the coaching process down to simple and effective questions that allow any leader to become a better coach.

The Coaching Habit focuses on 7 Questions, including in his own words, the world’s best coaching question, the AWE question, and what else? Each question has been carefully crafted using neuroscience to be most effective and Michael provides examples of how this works in a coaching conversation, what the coachee will be experiencing and how to build the habit of using the questions into your practice.

Since I first read The Coaching Habit couple of years ago, I have given his books as gifts, recommended them to anyone that will listen and re-read The Coaching Habit. Understanding that coaching is a practice, I continue to challenge myself to listen more, be more comfortable with silence, and tame my advice monster to be a more effective coach.

If you are curious about his work, look him up at The Coaching Habit.
